Sept. 20: Trinamul leaders in Burdwan are in a dilemma over prioritising what they want more from the civic polls in Burdwan’s Guskara.
The Guskara municipality is among 12 civic bodies that will go to polls tomorrow.
While Trinamul is confident of winning the polls in Guskara, it wants to ensure the defeat of one of the party nominees — local heavyweight Nityananda Chatterjee. He is running against the wishes of the party, which wanted his son to contest.
The 58-year-old has been accused of clandestinely filing his nomination for ward no. 3 for which his son Mithun was the party’s choice. Trinamul sources said they had no option but to back a party dissident who is contesting as an Independent against Nityananda.
“Nityananda is an embarrassment for us…. Our senior leaders have been forced to request people not to cast their votes in his favour even though he is contesting on the party symbol. His decision to contest has messed up things for us,” a Trinamul worker from Dharapara, on the outskirts of Guskara town, said.
While Trinamul leaders such as Mukul Roy are openly backing the dissident candidate, some local-level leaders said they were confused. “Nityananda is contesting on the party’s symbol. How can we tell the electorate to vote for the dissident candidate?” a local Trinamul leader said.
Nityananda said: “I have no regrets for being sidelined in the party. But people will vote for me despite some leaders backing the dissident candidate.”
The polls will be held in Chakdah in Nadia, Panihati and Habra in North 24-Parganas, Diamond Harbour in South 24-Parganas, Burdwan town and Guskara in Burdwan district, Dubrajpur in Birbhum, Mekhliganj and Haldibari in Cooch Behar, Alipurduar in Jalpaiguri, Dalkhola in North Dinajpur and Balurghat in South Dinajpur.
