Calcutta: United SC paid the price for goalkeeper Ishan Debnath’s mistakes and an erratic performance by their defence as they lost 2-3 to Aryan Club in a Calcutta Football League Premier Division championship round match at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday.
Mohun Bagan discard Stanley struck twice for Aryan while Kartick Kisku also got his name on the scoresheet.
For United SC, Biswajit Biswas and Eric Brown were the scorers.
With regular goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee busy playing in an inter-railway tournament, it was a golden opportunity for Ishan to make a point. But his howlers, coupled with some poor defending, cost United SC the points and peeved coach Eelco Schattorie.
“Hopefully, things will be fine once Sangram returns because both of our reserve ’keepers have to work on a lot of things,” Schattorie said.
United SC conceded the first goal as early as the 10th minute. Stanley picked up Subhadip Banerjee’s goalkick near the centre circle.
With none of the defenders challenging him, he made a dash towards the goal before his powerful strike from 20 yards crashed into the back of the net.
In the 28th minute, Aryans went 2-0 up after Stanley’s shot from 28 yards crashed into the net. Ishan was horribly out of place and had no chance to make a save. Once again, Stanley remained unchallenged.
United SC pulled one back in the 84th minute after Biswajit slotted home at the near post.
Two minutes later, Kisku re-instated the two-goal margin when he lobbed a ball over Ishan, who needlessly came charging out.
United SC reduced the margin during stoppage time after Eric converted from the spot.
