Chandigarh: Ryan ten Doeschate did the star turn for Otago Volts, as the team from New Zealand notched up their second win on the trot in the Champions League Twenty20 qualifiers, in Mohali, on Wednesday. The Volts defeated the Kandurata Maroons by six wickets and sealed their place in the main round of the CLT20.
Ten Doeschate, who had joined the team on Wednesday afternoon, took two wickets for nine runs before scoring 64 off 32 balls. He hit two fours and five towering sixes in his 41-minute stay at the wicket.
Batting first, the Maroons put up 154 for nine in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Upul Tharanga top-scored for them with 76 off 56 balls. For the Volts, Ian Butler was the pick of the bowlers, scalping three for 21.
James Neesham (32; 3x4, 1x6) gave Ten Doeschate good support as the Volts finished off the chase in 18 overs.
The following are excerpts
Brendon McCullum: A big thank you to Ryan ten Doeschate. He played really well today. His commitment was just phenomenal. His running between the wickets was just crazy. That really helped us to put the pressure back on the Maroons. Most importantly, the options they took in the middle overs were just phenomenal. He has been a thorough professional and a match winner for us.
Lahiru Thirimanne: I thought we were 10 to 15 runs short. It is hard to contain runs on this wicket. But our bowlers gave a good fight, but unfortunately we couldn’t defend this. But we should have got around 170 on this wicket.
To be honest, we didn’t expect that kind of running from Ten Doeschate. He batted really well. Credit for the match goes to him. I think our bowlers need to be consistent on these types of surfaces. We need to develop the habit of bowling consistently in the right areas throughout the innings.
Ryan ten Doeschate (MoM): Well, you can say it was just good timing that worked for me today. I just arrived here at around 12 in the afternoon from London via New Delhi. And straightaway got on to the field. When I went out to bat, the Maroons spinners were operating. The wicket was nice and hard. The ball was coming nicely on to the bat. So, I thought I could take my chances and go after the bowling. They were bowling at just about the right length for me.
I don’t know how the wicket played in the last match. But today it was nice.
