Shillong, Sept. 18: Three persons allegedly carrying narcotic substances from West Bengal were arrested by Meghalaya police in Ri Bhoi district late last night.
Around 11pm, police intercepted a Tata Sumo (TR-01P-6775) at 17th Mile, along National Highway 40, under Byrnihat police outpost and recovered 146 strips of Spasmo Proxyvon Plus and 1,091 bottles (100ml) of Phensedyl.
The spot is nearly 100km away from here.
Police arrested three persons — Md Usman Goni, 31, Raj Kumar Deb Barma, 33 and Sunny Deb Barma, 28 — all hailing from Tripura. The trio was on their way to Tripura with the intention of transporting the banned drugs, Ri Bhoi district superintendent of police C.V.S. Reddy said.
Police suspect that the ultimate destination of the drugs, which could fetch around Rs 2 lakh in the market, was neighbouring Bangladesh.
To evade possible seizure, the drugs were reportedly concealed in the doors, dashboard, sidelights and seats of the newly bought vehicle, police said. The arrested persons, who have been booked under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, were today remanded in police custody.
