Hazaribagh, Sept. 18: A Class VIII student under social pressure to marry her rapist committed suicide yesterday afternoon, while a Varanasi schoolgirl of Class X, who had befriended two Jharkhand youths on a train, was gang-raped the same morning.
The Class VIII girl, who committed pesticide at her Devitand village home in Koderma, had been raped by one Imtiyaz Ansari of neighbouring Raghuiadih on September 8 while on her way back home from tuition.
Her parents lodged an FIR at Jai Nagar police station. Imtiyaz, married and a father of two, was forwarded to Koderma jail on September 10 and the girl underwent her medical examination and recorded her statement in court, said thana officer-in-charge (OC) Ashok Singh.
But in the days that followed, the tide turned as Imtiyaz’s father Md Abbas approached the girl’s relatives with a marriage offer, which the latter started to consider.
The traumatised girl, rattled by the proposal, chose to end her life. An FIR against Abbas has been filed for abetting the girl’s suicide.
In the other case, the Class X student left her Varanasi home on the morning of September 16 after fighting with her parents, deciding to go to Mumbai, where her elder brother works.
At the station itself, her bag containing Rs 1,000, a mobile handset and a set of clothes got stolen, she said. The penniless girl met one Baldeo Mandal of Alagdiha village, Giridih, who promised to help her reach Mumbai. The duo boarded a passenger train.
On reaching Mughalsarai junction, Uttar Pradesh, an acquaintance of Baldeo, one Dullu Sao of Chouparan in Hazaribagh, joined them. The two men convinced the girl to accompany them to Koderma, again promising her help to reach Mumbai.
The trio boarded Ganga Sutlej Express and reached Koderma around 3.30am yesterday.
Then, the youths told her they had work in Chouparan, Hazaribagh, after which they would put her on a Mumbai-bound train. All three boarded an auto.
Around 11am, at Mahuadwar, 26km from the station, the men forced the girl off the auto and raped her in a nearby forest. The duo gave her Rs 1,000 and Dullu decided to take her to Koderma station. On the way, Mahuadwar villagers saw the girl crying incessantly and stopped the duo. Dullu tried to claim the girl was his daughter. As she told her story, he was caught and handed over to Chandwara police.
Chandwara police station OC Rambali Ram said raids to nab Baldeo were on.
