London, Sept. 17: Stories about the search for chemical weapons in Syria, the talks between America and Russia and developments at the UN, the future of the coalition government in the UK and other such relatively trivial stuff were brushed to one side today by dramatic breaking news — Shane Warne and Elizabeth Hurley have split up.
At least, it was reported that all is not well between the “loved up” former Australian spin bowler and the sometime actress and bikini model who have not — horror of horrors — sent tweets to each other for nearly three weeks.
Showbiz commentator Peter Ford told the Sunrise in Australia TV programme: “The obvious thing is they haven’t been tweeting for three weeks. This was really a relationship that was born in the Twitterverse and they played it out very publicly so if they suddenly stop tweeting each other and communicating in that fashion people think, ‘What’s going on?’ Elizabeth was due to arrive in Melbourne over a week ago and she hasn’t turned up.”
The couple should perhaps have known better than to have posed in Hello! for it is said that the “curse of Hello!” invariably strikes couples who flaunt their love, lust and lucre in the high circulation glossy magazine. Hurley, 48, and Warne, 44, had made it a point to parade their togetherness for nearly two years since the now defunct News of the World splashed news of their secret assignation at the Indian-owned Bentley Hotel in South Kensington.
But Hurley posed with her dog and sent out a recent tweet: “The more I know of man, the more I love my dog. Goodnight from me and Raja.”
While Hurley has been living in England, Warne, who turned 44 last Friday, has been with his children in Australia. Warne’s tweet was even more deeply philosophical: “Something to think about, it’s not what happens in your life, it’s how you react to what life throws at u, in both the good & bad times!”
Two years ago it was all so different. The News of the World front page story said that Hurley and Warne were seen kissing and cuddling passionately and that the couple were ensconced in the Australian’s suite for “more than 11 hours”.
The hotel’s owner, Joginder Sangar, did not find it unduly distressing to cope with the publicity that was heaped suddenly on his hotel. No one had bothered to mention the hotel when Manmohan Singh and Pratibha Patil had stayed at the hotel at different times and not in the suite which had been frequented by Hurley and Warne.
The News of the World’s “world exclusive” said that Hurley, wife of the Indian businessman, Arun Nayar, “has been caught in a steamy affair behind her husband’s back with cricket legend Shane Warne”.
The write up was in Mills & Boone type prose: “While they waited for their coats to be brought to them Liz pulled Warne towards her in a darkened doorway, cupped his face with her hands and leaned in to lock lips. After releasing from their clinch they gazed into each other’s eyes and smiled adoringly.”
“The couple were holed up in the suite which boasts a king-sized bed, en-suite whirlpool bath and a separate dining room until mid-evening,” the report continued. “The couple paused in the middle of the corridor for another passionate kiss. One observer said, ‘There’s absolutely no doubt this is a couple with incredibly strong feelings. They can’t keep their hands off each other.’”
It is well know that amorous couples who grace the pages of tabloids can hardly ever keep their hands off each other. Hurley responded by announcing that she wasn’t cheating on her husband by claiming they were already separated. Not willing to let Hurley to occupy the moral high ground all by herself, Warne, too, announced on Twitter that he and wife Simone had separated. She announced her split on Twitter: “For the record, my husband Arun and I separated a few months ago. Our close family and friends were aware of this.”
Warne confirmed he was no longer with his ex-wife Simone Callahan, with whom he had been attempting a reconciliation following their divorce in 2007.
He wrote on his website: “Sadly and unfortunately, Simone and I split up a while ago, our close friends and family were informed at that time. It is a private matter so we did not make it public. We remain friends and will continue to be good parents.”
Hurley and Warne went public with their relationship and posed for magazines. Warne’s children, wearing pristine white clothes, were dragged into the Hello! photoshoot. After roughly a year of dating, Shane proposed to Hurley at St Andrews, Scotland, in October 2011. In a joint interview last year, the couple spoke of their plans to marry in 2013, with ceremonies in both Australia and England. But now, even the regulation wedding in Rajasthan, so favoured by celebrities, will not take place. The Sun said that friends believed long distance had ended their relationship.
A source was quoted as saying: “They have been so loved-up and have tried to make it work, but the distance has been a huge issue.”
The Mirror spoke to both of their agents about the rift but neither commented on the story, also picked up by the Australian media.
