Gaya, Sept. 16: Two special auxiliary police (SAP) personnel were feared killed and two others injured in a suspected Naxalite attack on a police patrol team this evening near Kanjiyaar village in Gaya.
The armed squad members of the CPI (Maoist) attacked the patrolling team of Dobhi police station around 8pm near the village under the jurisdiction of Sherghati sub-division, around 140km south of Patna. The injured cops have been rushed to the Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital in Gaya town for treatment.
According to reports, around six police personnel, including an assistant sub-inspector of police, were travelling in the patrol car. The Maoists in large numbers cordoned off the patrolling vehicle and started firing at it indiscriminately, killing two SAP jawans.
As the firing started, the driver tried to escape accelerating the speed of the vehicle. But the patrol car overturned near Amarut village, around 1km from Kanjiyaar.
Inspector-general (operations) Amit Kumar confirmed the attack on the police team.
Sherghati deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Rajesh Kumar confirmed the death of two SAP jawans in the attack, but could not give the number of personnel injured in the incident till the filing of the report. Nobody could confirm if the Maoists fled the scene with the arms and ammunition of the policemen.
On getting information about the Maoist attack on the patrol vehicle, a police team led by Kumar rushed towards the spot. Other senior officers from the district headquarters have also been asked to reach the place of occurrence with reinforcements.
The policemen of the nearby police stations have been instructed to assist the Dhobhi police in the combing operation launched to apprehend the Maoists involved in the attack.
The attack on the patrol vehicle has sent a shockwave among the residents of the nearby villages. It has also exposed the porous security arrangements in the Naxalite-hit areas.
