Calcutta: Practice makes perfect, so lack of practice led an imperfect United SC play out a goalless draw against Railway FC in their CFL Premier Division Super 12 match, at the Barasat Stadium, on Sunday.
Having said that, it’s not really United SC’s fault that they couldn’t have proper pre-season practice. Struggling without a sponsor, the club which finished fourth in the last I-League, weren’t even sure if they could put together a team this season. Thanks to the players’ and the coach’s support, United are finally back in action.
However, United SC have a lot of ground to cover to be the competitive team they were last season. Apart from fine-tuning their fitness, coach Eelco Schattorie will have to devise ways to forge better co-ordination between his players.
They often seemed lost and lacked vision while distributing passes.
United’s first real chance came in the 28th minute. Asif K’s centre somehow landed at Ranty’s feet inside the box. But with a clear view of the goal, the Nigerian shot straight at a Railway FC defender.
Then, in the 42nd minute, Vineeth set up Ranty within the box. With only the goalkeeper at his mercy, Ranty once again failed to do the needful.
In the 73rd minute, a through pass saw Ranty jostle for the ball with the Railway FC ’keeper and three defenders inside the box. The ’keeper, who was charging towards the ball, missed it completely and Ranty had an open net in front of him. But he kept fumbling, giving the rival defenders enough time to clear the ball.
Thereafter, Ranty messed up two more chances in front of the goal. On the first occasion he was guilty of a hand-ball, on the second he managed a weak header off a perfect cross.
