Golaghat, Sept. 15: A resident of Jugibari village, 5km from here, committed suicide after murdering his three-year-old daughter and seriously injuring his wife.
Villagers said Golap Ekka, 25, a bamboo trader, used to frequently quarrel with his wife Rebika, whom he had met while working in Kohima and then married.
The couple had settled down in Jugibari, Golap’s ancestral village.
His mother, Joshuwa, said just before the incident, her granddaughter was playing outside when Golap forcibly dragged her into the house and locked her in along with his wife.
On hearing their cries, she and her eldest daughter-in-law first knocked on the door and then broke it open. They saw the child lying dead on the ground, her mother in a pool of blood nearby and Golap hanging from the ceiling. They immediately took Rebika to Golaghat civil hospital, where she was admitted in a critical condition.
Golaghat deputy superintendent of police Budheswar Khaklari said they were yet to ascertain a motive but didn’t rule out marital discord.
He said the police had been looking for Golap since last year in connection with a rape. “He was evading arrest,” he said.
