Suri, Sept. 15: A Birbhum Trinamul worker was today shot dead by suspected members of a rival faction allegedly over the spoils of coal smuggling in the area.
Sheikh Manoj, 35, was shot dead outside a tea stall in Khoirashol’s Barrah village following a scuffle with three youths.
Police said Manoj, who was shot twice in the chest and abdomen, died on the spot. The assailants fled on two motorcycles.
Today’s murder comes a little over a month after the former Trinamul block president of Khoirashol, Ashok Ghosh, was shot dead by bike-borne miscreants, apparently over coal pilfering. Trinamul block president Ashok Mukherjee has been accused of the murder.
Asked about today’s murder, district police chief C. Sudhakar said: “We have started an investigation.”
According to Trinamul insiders, two local groups — one led by a Khoirashol panchayat samiti member Jainal Sheikh and the other by local Trinamul leader Abdul Haque Kaderi — are at loggerheads over coal smuggling in the area.
“Sheikh Manoj was a follower of Jainal,” a Trinamul leader said.
