Guwahati, Sept. 14: Forest staff of Manas National Park killed a man who attacked a patrol party after midnight last night.
Sources said a group, comprising 10 foresters, including homeguards, was on patrol last night in the Narayanguri area of the park when they encountered a gang of 15, suspected to be woodcutters or poachers, around 12.30am.
When challenged, the gang attacked the patrol with daos and khukris. A homeguard had a miraculous escape.
The source said the patrol team fired in self-defence. Most of the goons jumped into the Beki river and escaped.
A search operation was carried out this morning and a body, identified as that of Md Shah Alam, 30, was recovered from the spot.
Alam, alias Munsi, was a resident of the Elengamari area of Baksa district.
An FIR has been filed. Police officers and forest officials of Bansbari range of Manas visited the spot today. A post-mortem of the body will be done tomorrow.
