New Delhi: Shooting star Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Tuesday joined active politics and became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jaipur. A colonel in the Indian Army, the 2004 Olympic silver medallist has opted to take voluntary retirement to pursue his political career.
Rathore is expected fight the assembly elections in Rajasthan later this year.
Rathore is the second top-ranked shooter to join politics in recent years. Pistol shooter Jaspal Rana, an Asian Games and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, had unsuccessfully contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket from Uttarakhand. He later joined Congress.
“For 23 years of my life I have served the nation in war and peace to the best of my abilities. I am trained to fight by the finest Army of the world and so I must not back out when the nation is faced with a different kind of threat,” said Rathore in a statement.
