Calcutta: At 40, when his contemporaries are either into coaching and other related activities, Leander Paes continues to be going strong.
The US Open doubles triumph with Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek only reflects that the urge to finish at the top and gain more success hasn’t died down one bit in Leander.
The fourth-seeded Indo-Czech pair demolished the second seeded Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-1, 6-3 in one hour and 12 minutes at Arthur Ashe stadium.
No wonder Twitter was flooded with congratulatory messages, with Martina Navratilova, Somdev Dev Varman and even Mahesh Bhupathi showering praise on Leander.
While Bhupathi said that Leander was moving like he is 20 years of age, Somdev said it was an unreal effort.
The praises were not just confined to tennis stars of past and present. Such is the impact of his achievement that even P.V. Sindhu, a rising shuttler, showered her share of accolades on Leander.
Here’s what they had to say on Twitter (alphabetically):
Mahesh Bhupathi: LP!!! 40?? Really??? Moving like he is 20.. Inspiring stuff.
Somdev Dev Varman: Wow LP. Legend!! Unreal effort !!
Martina Navratilova: Congrats to my friend Leander Paes for winning the men’s doubles!#USOpen
