Suri, Sept. 9: A monitoring committee to oversee development projects of the Trinamul-run Birbhum zilla parishad has district party chief Anubrata Mondal as the chairman but also includes his adversaries such as MLAs Swapan Ghosh and Gadadhar Hazra.
The Birbhum zilla parishad board was formed today with Bikash Roy Chowdhury taking oath as the sabhadhipati.
Trinamul insiders said the committee was set up by state-level leaders to strike a balance between the two rival factions of the party in the wake of the murder of the former block president of Trinamul in Khoirashol, Ashok Ghosh.
Ghosh, who belonged to the anti-Anubrata faction, was shot dead by bike-borne miscreants in Khoirashol on August 12. “After Ashok Ghosh’s murder, his wife blamed some followers of Anubrata Mondal, including present block president Ashok Mukherjee, for the crime. So, there was the need to try to remain united in Birbhum,” a Trinamul leader said.
Anubrata said: “The committee will look after the works of the zilla parishad and the board will discuss about. The board will discuss projects with the committee before starting them.”
Suri MLA Ghosh said: “I welcome the move to make me a committee member. I am available for any kind of development work in the district.”
