Guwahati, Sept. 9: Food Corporation of India (FCI) Sports Club got the better of former champions Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) SC by a solitary goal in a lacklustre relegation round match of the Abhishek Motors RG Baruah Trophy Guwahati Super Division Football League at Nehru Stadium here today.
With this win, FCI kept their hopes alive for survival in the Super League although their fate, along with Assam Police Blues, will depend on the match between the two sides scheduled for Wednesday.
After the end of the ninth round, FCI are now placed seventh with nine points and the policemen at the bottom of the eight-team tally with six points.
Right from the kickoff, both the sides failed to produce anything special as far as moves were concerned with play being confined mainly to the midfield. Biswamitra Basumatary tried to break the deadlock in the eighth minute with a powerful strike from inside the box but failed to trouble FCI custodian Gobinda Boro as his shot went way above the crossbar.
William Gangte failed to provide ASEB with an all-important lead in the 25th minute despite being in a fine position. Receiving a pass from Sanjay Boro from the right flank, Gangte’s firm strike from inside the box was way off the mark.
With the second half kicking off, it didn’t take much long for FCI to break the deadlock as Akan Khaklary’s fine flick of the head found the back of the net in the 48th minute.
Seasoned campaigner David March Goyari’s flag kick was a setpiece for Khaklary to place it into the net.
The powermen, in search of their equaliser, came close with a powerful free kick by Sanjay Boro. However, his strike was saved by glovesman Boro in the 54th minute.
Gangte, despite being in an absolute scoring position, managed to shoot way above the target in the 69th minute. The powermen continued with repeated attempts but their attacks often tackled in the FCI defence line.
Green Valley SC will clash with Sunrise AC in their last championship round match on Tuesday.
