An 80-year-old man was crushed to death by the rear wheels of a bus after he fell off its footboard at Parnasree on Diamond Harbour Road on Monday afternoon.
Police said Manmathanath Naskar of Bishnupur in South 24-Parganas had slipped while boarding the bus around 3pm as his shoes and the footboard were wet from the rain. He was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
Naskar and his 14-year-old grandson, Rajesh, were returning home from Howrah. On the way, they had stopped at Behala to visit a relative. “They were waiting under the awning of a shop at the Behala Chowrasta crossing to catch a bus home.
“When a bus arrived, Naskar helped his grandson board first but struggled to get a foothold on the slippery footboard. Before he could climb up, the bus started and he slipped,” an officer said.
