Barasat, Sept. 9: The CPM pradhan of the Amlani panchyat samiti in North 24-Parnagas was shot dead by bike-borne men tonight.
Jahangir Alam Gazi, 45, was cycling home from his maternal uncle’s home in Basirhat’s Talpukur, 70km from Calcutta, when he was accosted by two bike-borne youths near a market around 9.45pm.
Witnesses said the men had an altercation with Gazi before one of them pulled out a gun and pumped two bullets into the leader’s head.
Gazi was taken to a health centre in Hasnabad, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Gautam Deb, the district secretary of the CPM, blamed the Trinamul Congress for the murder.
Food minister and the Trinamul observer for the district, Jyotipriyo Mullick, refuted the charge. He said the CPM accused Trinamul of crimes without checking.
The CPM will stage a demonstration in Bashirhat tomorrow in the presence of senior leaders.
Chief Minster Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to attend two programmes in district headquarters Barasat tomorrow.
