Kathmandu: A major mishap was averted at the SAFF Championships on Sunday after an Afghanistan player – Farzad Ghulam – suffered a cardiac arrest during their semi-final match against Nepal at the Dasarath Stadium, here.
The incident took place in the second half of the match when Farzad collided with a Nepal player near the Afghanistan goalmouth and fell down.
What initially looked like a minor injury turned out to be a more serious one, as Farzad lay unconscious on the ground. The players were seen frantically pointing towards their bench.
Farzad’s heart had stopped beating for a few seconds before a life-saving Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was given after an ambulance was rushed onto the ground.
The player was whisked away to a nearby nursing home where his situation was understood to be stable. Organisers said that the doctors have termed it a mild cardiac arrest. (PTI)
