Krishnagar, Sept. 8: A 12-year-old boy who stayed back at home to watch a cartoon show on TV as his mother went to neighbour’s house was found hanging last evening.
Police and the boy’s parents said their son could have died trying to imitate stunts by his favourite cartoon characters.
“My son was addicted to cartoon shows on TV. He would often try to enact scenes,” sobbed Tanmoy’s father Tapan Biswas, who had gone to the market in Putikhali village and returned home to find his son hanging from the ceiling with a towel around the neck.
Mother Geeta said Tanmoy didn’t want to come with her to the neighbour’s house and miss out on the cartoon show.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death.
Asked if Tanmoy was rebuked by any teacher in school, his parents said their son was a “good student” who scored high in unit tests and exams. Teachers at Majhdia Rail Bazar High School, where Tanmoy studied, echoed Tapan and Geeta.
An investigating officer said the police were yet to find any strong ground to establish a suicide.“We have started an investigation. There is no strong ground yet to believe that the boy committed suicide. We have talked to his parents and neighbours. We have also spoken to some of his teachers,” the officer said.
He added: “His parents said he was addicted to cartoon shows on TV and would often imitate scenes. The death could be because of that.”
Tanmoy’s mother ruled out her son was under any pressure from teachers or was suffering from depression.
“He went to play with his friends after returning from school. In the evening, he came back and studied as usual. After studies, he wanted to watch cartoons and I allowed him to. I went to a neighbour’s house,” Geeta said.
Tanmoy was taken to Krishnaganj block medical hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
