Ranchi, Sept. 7: The First Citizen seems to be the most popular choice for chief guest at varsity convocations.
Ranchi University (RU), which will organise its 28th convocation later this year, is keen on President Pranab Mukherjee gracing the occasion. The tentative date for the event is either November 25 or sometime in the first week of December depending on the schedule of the chief guest.
If Mukherjee agrees to be the chief guest, this will be his second visit to the state this year as President. He was the chief guest at the convocation of Sido-Kanhu Murmu University in Dumka on April 30.
“We have already requested governor-cum-chancellor Syed Ahmed to invite special guests and have suggested the name of President Pranab Mukherjee as the chief guest. We are all expecting him to accept the invitation and attend the convocation,” pro-vice chancellor N. Raziuddin told The Telegraph.
The convocation, he added, would be held in November in keeping with the university’s calendar. “In case of any emergency, it may be deferred,” he said.
Mukherjee, if he agrees, will be the third President to attend RU’s convocation. In 2004, former President APJ Abdul Kalam awarded degrees to the students, while in 2010, Pratibha Patil addressed the 25th convocation.
RU has already asked students to fill up relevant forms for the convocation. Only those who graduated last year will be eligible to apply. The last date to submit application forms at the computer centre on the central library premises in Morabadi is September 20.
“At the moment, we cannot say how many students will receive degrees. It depends on the number of applications we receive from them,” the pro-VC added.
Apart from graduates, those who have cleared their DLitt, PhD, MPhil, MA, MSc, MCom, MCA, MBA and other postgraduate courses last year could also apply for degrees.
Trademark gowns will be handed over to students a couple of days before the programme. The varsity has tied up with three agencies to stitch the gowns.
The 27th convocation of RU was held in February this year. Union HRD minister M.M. Pallam Raju was the chief guest. As many as 28,977 students received their degrees, while 36 gold medallists of the university were awarded on the occasion.
