Calcutta, Sept. 7: A college student’s father, harassed for the past three years since the alleged molestation of the young woman by two youths, died early this morning after being assaulted by the duo in a South 24-Parganas village yesterday.
Police said Tapas Halder and Basudeb Adhikari, in their twenties, barged into the house of the girl’s father in Joynagar’s Srikrishnanagar village last evening and bludgeoned him to death with wooden sticks. The 50-year-old man, a barber, was hit repeatedly on the head till he lost consciousness.
The man’s wife and four children, including the girl who had allegedly been molested, pleaded with the attackers to let him go but the duo did not listen, the police said.
The man died at Baruipur sub-divisional hospital at 3am today.
His daughter, a first-year college student, said in the police complaint today that Tapas and Basudeb had dragged her to a deserted place from a Saraswati puja pandal three years ago and molested her.
“The girl told us that the matter had been resolved following the intervention of some village elders and no police complaint was lodged,” an officer said.
The girl alleged that Tapas and Basudeb, along with some other youths in the locality, used to tease and abuse her father often for the past three years.
The man’s eldest son said: “Unable to bear the taunts, my father went to the house of the youths to speak to their parents.”
Hours later, Tapas, Basudeb and Basudeb’s mother Basanti went to the man’s house.
District police chief Praveen Tripathi said cases of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and trespassing had been lodged against the trio, who are absconding.
A police officer said: “Prima facie, it appears that the attack was not pre-planned. This is why we have not charged them with murder for now.”
