Raiganj, Sept. 6: Police today arrested a close associate of Trinamul Youth Congress district president Gautam Pal in connection with last month’s alleged assault on the principal of Meghnad Saha College in Itahar, Swapna Mukherjee.
Around noon today, the police arrested Trinamul worker Babusona Mahanta, 27, from his house in Itahar, about 25km from here. He was taken to the Itahar police station where he was interrogated. The police said that he would be produced in court tomorrow.
Babusona and Pal were named in an FIR filed by the college principal after she and two teachers and a non-teaching staff were assaulted and her office ransacked on August 27.
The incident took place after Pal’s wife, Pampa, was allegedly caught cheating during the sociology paper I of the Part I exams. Pal and Babusona had reportedly led a group of Trinamul supporters and carried out the assault and ransacking.
Pal, however, filed a counter FIR, accusing Mukherjee and others of outraging the modesty of his wife. Following the incident, the authorities of Gour Banga University decided to cancel the registration of Pampa and 73 others, who were indulging in copying during the exams.
Incidentally, the arrest follows Mukherjee’s visit to Calcutta on Wednesday to submit a complaint to the State Women’s Commission.
Additional police superintendent David Lepcha said that the arrest was made in connection with the complaint filed by the principal with the Itahar police station.
“One person has been arrested in connection with the alleged assault on the principal of Meghnad Saha College in Itahar. We are investigating the case,” Lepcha said.
The arrest, however, has not gone down well with the Trinamul Congress.
Amal Acharjee, the district Trinamul Congress president and MLA from Itahar, said the police were acting in a biased manner. “Instead of arresting the principal and the others, the police have arrested one of our workers who has been falsely implicated,” Acharjee said.
