Ranchi, Sept. 6: The state Congress today decided to hold a rally at Morabadi grounds in Ranchi in the coming months, a first in two decades.
Previous party leaders never dared to organise a rally on this sprawling venue, fearing they wouldn’t be able to pull enough crowds to fill up even a quarter of the grounds.
But state unit chief Sukhdeo Bhagat said the party should not fight shy of assessing its support base through such rallies. Bhagat was reviewing the performance of the district units during a meeting in Ranchi.
“If something never happened in the past, we will do it now. I am going to Delhi today evening to get the final nod from the central leadership,” Bhagat said.
A party leader said this rally had long been on Bhagat’s wish list. Moreover, the Congress is under psychological pressure with BJP planing a lakh-plus rally of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi at the same venue.
He said, “Even small regional parties are regularly holding rallies at the grounds. If we shy away, it will send a wrong signal.”
