Traders have threatened to shut down Golmuri market, one of the busiest commercial centres of the city, for an indefinite period if action is not taken against Jusco officials and policemen, who allegedly assaulted an employee of one of the shops on Thursday evening, within 48 hours.
The shopkeepers, who submitted memoranda to East Singhbhum DC Amitabh Kaushal and SSP Richard Lakra under the aegis of Jamshedpur Chamber of Commerce on Friday, demanded that the hecklers be suspended. They also submitted CCTV footages, which show some men and police personnel manhandling Rahul Kumar Singh.
“If those involved are not identified and suspended, we will shut our shops and block Golmuri Main Road after 48 hours,” said president of Jamshedpur Chamber of Commerce Mohanlal Agarwal.
Six employees were present at the shop, which deals in industrial batteries and automobile spares and is owned by Manoj Kumar Khatri, when the incident occurred around 6pm. “After not finding the owner, the Jusco officials and policemen started abusing Rahul. They held him by his collar. A Jusco official even slapped him,” Agarwal said.
Jusco spokesperson Rajesh Rajan said a team had gone to the shop along with constables to disconnect illegal power connection, but denied that any of the officials had assaulted the employee. “The constables had an altercation with the shop’s staff,” he said.
The shopkeepers said they had approached Golmuri OC Nehaluddin Khan, but he denied any of his men had visited the shop.
Khan said the traders did not show him the footages. “If they had shown me the proof, I would have taken action.”
Golmuri market, spread over approximately 2.5sqkm, has more than 700 shops and establishments.
