Calcutta: Mary Ann Gomes won the national title for the third time on the trot on Thursday. But victories in the earlier editions didn’t make her job any easier this time. Rather, as she says, it was the most difficult one till date.
“I have won the national meet before as well… But this round-robin format is a tricky one as everyone has to be on their toes to outwit the opponents. “Honestly, this was one of the most difficult tournaments I’ve been part of. I was nervous because all the others were playing so well,” Mary Ann said after her victory.
“One came across situations where one had to depend on others’ results… That leads to added pressure,” Mary Ann explained.
On Thursday, though, she didn’t have it too smooth against Ivana Furtado, despite playing with white.
“After I drew, I thought I lost the championship,” she admitted, adding: “I went to my room and to divert my mind, thought about everything else except the game.
“But after a while, my dad called me up and informed that I’m the winner as Soumya (Swaminathan) had lost to Padmini (Rout).”
According to Mary Ann, it was her win over top seed Tania Sachdev and overall consistency that helped her triumph once again.
