New Delhi: IM Vijayan was a thoroughly disappointed man on Thursday.
If his side Kerala Police’s loss to Indian Navy by a solitary goal in the Durand Cup frustrated him, what shocked him was India’s 1-2 defeat to Nepal in the SAFF Championship.
“This is terrible, I cannot believe that we lost to Nepal,” said the legendary striker. “I can’t remember India losing to Nepal… No, as a footballer, I don’t think I ever had to lose against them. That’s unacceptable.”
Vijayan, however, said the Indian players should not lose heart.
“Such things do happen in football… I am sure they will recover and play well in the semi-finals,” he said.
Vijayan is hoping the new franchise based league to be started by All India Football Federation (AIFF)’s marketing partners, would make the game more professional. “That should be good. I am ready to be a part of that league. I can be the coach or manager of any team,” said Vijayan.
