Guwahati, Sept. 5: The AGP today demonstrated against rotting of potatoes in a government-owned cold storage at Furkating in Golaghat district.
Farmers of 30 nearby villages, including Jamuguri, Lakhibari, Amguri, Kalujan, Nugura, Guwaltup, Dousomuwa and Rupkolia, had sold the potatoes.
The incident came to light on Monday when some of the farmers visited the cold storage and found the potatoes in a rotten state. They also noticed the potatoes had started sprouting.
The AGP’s Golaghat unit demanded that the district administration and state government pay them adequate compensation and alleged the incident had happened owing to the government’s negligence.
AGP members held at meeting at Golaghat after which they took out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner. The party also criticised the Congress-ruled state government for not being able to protect people living on the inter-state border with Nagaland.
The Opposition party, in a statement issued today, alleged the government has handed over 350 bighas of land at Garobasti in Mariani of Golaghat district to Nagaland and demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter.
