New Delhi, Sept. 5: Mulayam Singh Yadav today sacked Kamal Farooqi as the Samajwadi Party’s secretary and a member of its national executive for “condemning” the arrest of Indian Mujahideen operative Yasin Bhatkal.
Farooqi was informed of the decision in a letter signed by the party general secretary, Ramgopal Yadav.
Soon after Bhatkal’s arrest, Farooqi asked if he was nabbed only because he was a Muslim. He said: “If Bhatkal is a terrorist, he should not be spared. But if he has been arrested just because he is a Muslim, then caution should be exercised. We do not wish to send a wrong message to an entire community….”
The party dissociated itself from Farooqi’s statements, provoked protests from the BJP and the Congress that dubbed them “deeply regrettable” and “ridiculous”.
