Ranchi, Sept. 5: The adult male tiger, which had sneaked out of Palamau Tiger Reserve (PTR) apparently in search of a new territory, is believed to be heading back home even as forest officials promised villagers compensation for their dead cattle.
According to a well-placed source, fresh pugmarks were spotted in reverse direction today, suggesting that the big cat was coming out of Balumath range in Latehar forest division and had moved backwards around 2km towards PTR.
However, none of the trackers or villagers reported any sighting of the animal or fresh prey kills in the zone, considered to be out of PTR.
Latehar DFO Mamta Priyadarshi said: “The tiger will come back in a couple of days as Balumath is an alien area. Tigers have the tendency to go back to its former territory in due course of time.”
Priyadarshi also said they were facilitating documentation work by villagers so that they could get speedy compensation for the two buffaloes that were reportedly killed by the tiger at Huru village.
“We are helping them by co-ordinating with the circle office as the compensation claims will require attestation. According to norms, any cattle kill outside the core area of the tiger reserve should be compensated and it will be done soon,” she added.
