Ranchi, Sept. 5: Former PLFI rebel Basant Gope (35), a key accused in two cases of carnage in 2011, was arrested from Salgi locality in Ghagra area of Gumla yesterday.
SP Rakesh Bansal said five of a family were killed in their sleep at Taisera village on January 6 that year. The same night, four members of another family were killed in Brinda village. “Gope figured as the key accused in both cases.”
Gope is also an accused in seven more criminal cases, including murder, extortion and arson, registered with different police stations in Gumla.
Police received a tip-off on his presence in Salgi, where he was planning “something big”, and laid a trap. “We had been looking for him for long. He had dissociated himself with the PLFI in the recent past and was running his own gang,” said Bansal.
In another development, Gumla police arrested three rebels of the Tritiya Prastuti Committee yesterday.
They have been identified as Rameshwar Mahto, Sunil Mahto and Sanjay Mahto. Two rifles, three pistols, six cartridges, four sets of military uniform and three mobile phones were recovered from them.
“Interrogation is on and we will forward them to jail,” the SP said.
