The high court on Thursday struck down the Calcutta Municipal Corporation’s decision to allow an association headed by Trinamul councillor Susmita Chatterjee to organise Ganesh puja at Allen Garden on Park Street.
The ruling followed a petition by another association, BNB Welfare Association, that has been organising Ganesh puja at Allen Garden for years.
Justice Sanjib Banerjee, who struck down the CMC’s decision, asked the civic authorities to sit with both BNB Welfare Association and Ghosh’s Chowringhee Welfare Association before deciding who would be allowed to hold the puja.
“Last year, too, we had held Ganesh puja at Allen Garden. But when we approached the CMC for their permission this year, we were told that they had already given permission to BNB Welfare Association to hold this year’s puja,” counsel appearing for petitioner Ashok Sharma of the Chowringee Welfare Association submitted in the court on Thursday.
Sharma produced some documents in an attempt to substantiate his submission. After going through the papers, the court passed the interim order.Sources said both associations had links with Trinamul Congress and the tiff is a result of intra-party rivalry.
Dilip Sahani and Sonu Sau, both in their mid-thirties, were arrested on Thursday evening for stealing a taxi from near Howrah station on Monday night.
