SpiceJet will begin trial runs of daily night flights between Calcutta and Bagdogra from October 1, a move that will allow tourists from the city to have lunch in the hills and dinner at home.
The airline said on Wednesday flights would operate till October 26, reaching Bagdogra at 7pm and taking off for Calcutta at 7.30pm. It also announced a new morning flight from Calcutta that would reach Bagdogra at 9.40am and depart at 10.10am.
Another flight will land at Bagdogra at 5.55pm and take off for Calcutta at 6.25pm en route to Delhi.
At present, the last Bagdogra-Calcutta flight is at 3.15pm. This means a tourist from Gangtok, a five-hour drive from Bagdogra, has to check out of his hotel at 8 am.
The evening flight at 7.30pm will allow him to spend a few more hours in the cooler climes.
SpiceJet decided on the trial run following a letter from the Airports Authority of India that had asked the airline to operate evening flights to and from Bagdogra.
