An elderly man from Asansol who had come to Calcutta for treatment was robbed in a Sarat Bose Road guesthouse early on Wednesday.
The CCTV cameras in the guesthouse captured a man in the act, walking in and out of the room where the 75-year-old had put up before vanishing behind a door that opens to the rear part of the building.
The police said the thief had taken away Rs 80,000 from the victim’s briefcase and shirt pocket.
Police suspect someone in the guesthouse had tipped off the thief that the elderly man, who had checked in on August 27, slept with his door unlocked so people could enter the room if he fell ill.
The victim had retired to his room around 1am, taken sleeping pills and fallen asleep. “I came to know about the theft only in the morning. I was so scared to see an iron rod the man left in the corridor. I shudder to think what he would have done to me had I been awake,” the elderly man told Metro, refusing to be named.
Police sources said a scaffolding on an outer wall of the four-storeyed guesthouse might have helped the thief scale the wall and enter the building through the terrace door that was left open.
“We are suspecting an insider’s hand. The man in the CCTV footage appears to be a worker hired to paint the exterior of the building. We are trying to identify him. There could also be a second suspect who stayed away from the CCTV camera zone,” said an officer of Tollygunge police station.
The victim, who is suffering from cardiac and spinal cord disorders, was to leave for Hyderabad on Wednesday. He has deferred his departure.
A 45-year-old man was run over by a vehicle at the crossing of Old Court Court Street and Waterloo Street, in front of Raj Bhavan, on Wednesday afternoon. The youth is yet to be identified.
