Shillong, Sept. 3: Thousands of schools and colleges were affected today as teachers, under the banner of the Joint Action Committee of All Teachersí Associations of Meghalaya (JACATAM), went on mass casual leave to protest against the government.
Tomorrow, the teachers, belonging to deficit and ad hoc schools and colleges, will organise dharnas across the state. For the past few months, the teachers have wanted to hold talks with policy makers to discuss reforming the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), regular payment of salaries to teachers, and provincialisation of teachersí service.
However, policy makers have not responded to the demand for dialogue and, instead, asked teachers to discuss their demands with department officers.
Tomorrow, teachers will assemble at Studentsí Field, Jaiaw, in the city because the district administration did not allow them to hold dharna in different locations.
The decision to allow protests only at Studentsí Field was in view of the prevailing law and order situation in the city after more than a dozen pressure groups called for agitation to press for the implementation of the inner-line permit (ILP) system in the state. On Teachersí Day, they will hold a public meeting at Malki ground.
