Silchar, Sept. 3: A group of eight to 10 men, suspected to be militants, barged into a house at Rankhal in Dullabcharra area of Karimganj district last night and fired several shots at a man after he refused to comply with their orders.
Bishwajit Vaishnav, 30, was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical.
Sources said the gunmen’s main target was Bishwajit’s uncle, Sudam Vaishnav, a local businessman.
The armed men broke into Sudam’s house around 10pm and demanded Rs 2 lakh at gunpoint. But after he refused to comply, they went to Bishwajit’s house, located nearby, and forced him to crack a deal with his uncle for them. When Bishwajit refused, they firedseveral bullets at him.
Rankhal, 120km from here, is located on the Karimganj-Mizoram border.
The army camp at Chargola, close to Rankhal, was withdrawn recently. Residents said the move has only encouraged lawbreakers to create trouble in the village.
Expressing concern over the incident, Ratabari MLA Kripanath Mala said he had taken up the matter with Karimganj MP Lalit Mohan Shuklabaidya and asked him to inform the home ministry about the incident.
“He (Shuklabaidya) assured me that he would take up the matter seriously,” Mala said.
“We have identified the culprits and our operations are on but we cannot disclose the details as investigations are under way. We are trying to get the army camp back in the area for the safety and security of the people of the locality,” Karimganj superintendent of police, Pradip Pujari, told this correspondent.
