Hazaribagh, Sept. 3: In a remarkable demonstration of solidarity for the 16-year-old gang rape victim, the town downed shutters today at the daylong bandh called by citizen outfit Hazaribagh Ki Aam Janta and supported by political parties of all hues.
As evident from placards, agitators had two major demands. First, they wanted all four rapists, led by Dhanu Ram, son of inspector (CID) Arjun Ram, be hanged. Second, they wanted the inspector (CID) to be arrested and sacked for trying to force Dhanu’s release from sadar thana on August 31.
Security was beefed up near the home of the CID inspector at Deepugarha. The four rapists — Dhanu, his friends Anurag Basu, Sonu and Ritesh — who had raped the girl for two days at the empty summerhouse of former MP from Bengal Tutu Bose, are in jail.
Protesters waved placards reading “Baap Sarkari, Beta Balaatkari”.
Citizens apart, workers of CPM, BJP, CPI, Ajsu, ABVP and NSUI also raised slogans. Ajsu workers burnt the effigy of chief minister Hemant Soren for poor law and order.
Rallies took place on the 2km stretch between District More Chowk and Jhanda Chowk, but shops, schools and banks stayed closed. Traffic was thin. Vehicular movement on Ranchi-Patna Highway (NH-33) was not disturbed.
Principal of Rose Bud School, Deepugarha resident Ajay Kumar Singh, a frontrunner of the agitation, said the bandh was the biggest voluntary protest seen in Hazaribagh.
“People are furious that a policeman’s son and his friends felt they could get away with gang rape. Public fury mounted when inspector Arjun tried to coerce sadar thana personnel into releasing his rapist son,” Singh said.
At sadar thana, Hazaribagh, sources said OC Dinesh Kumar Singh had sent his complaint concerning Arjun’s coercion to SP Kaushik. Sources said Kaushik drafted a report based on the OC’s complaint and forwarded it to K.S. Meena, additional director general of police (CID).
“Once I read SP Kaushik’s report, I will be in a position to say what kind of charges can be levelled against Arjun,” Meena told The Telegraph.
Kaushik has asked sadar circle inspector Samshad Alam Shamsi to draft a chargesheet of the gang rape and submit it to court in 30 days.
