Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium at Hotwar will spring back to life once again this September, nearly two years after hosting the high-octane 34th National Games.
While the stadium will host the 53rd National Open Athletics Championship from September 7-10, it will also be the venue for SAF junior games on September 28 and 29.
Speaking at a news meet in the state capital on Tuesday, Jharkhand Athletics Association president Madhukant Pathak said 1,036 athletes and technical staff from 24 states would take part in the National Open Athletics Championship. “Preparations are on in full swing. We have also decided to felicitate all top players. This will be first time that any state will felicitate players from other states,” he said.
The event will witness the presence of former legends such as P.T. Usha, who will accompany trainees of her academy, and budding athletes of national and international circuits. Accommodation has been arranged at Khelgaon flats, 100 of which have been sanctioned by the government. A budget of Rs 30 lakh has been earmarked for the event.
“The state government has agreed to help us. We are also seeking sponsorships from Samsung, Jindal group and CCL,” said Pathak.
