A software engineer driving to office in a Maruti Swift fell into a ditch off the Basanti Highway while trying to save a goat that had strayed into the middle of the road on Tuesday.
Prosenjit Bera, in his mid- 30s, was lucky to escape with minor injuries as his car careened into the canal along the highway that has claimed at least three lives in the past six months and left several injured.
An employee of Cognizant Technology Solutions, Bera was on his way to office at Bantala IT Park when the accident occurred near BIT College around 1pm. He was discharged after preliminary treatment at a private hospital.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the car was speeding and the driver lost control while steering clear of a goat. The car fell into the ditch and local people rushed to help,” said an officer of Calcutta leather complex police station.
The car was later lifted from the ditch with the help of a crane and kept at the police station.
Senior police officers said the accident spot, around 7km from Science City where the 86km highway starts, has proper signage but drivers tend to speed through the smooth stretch.
“We have observed that the road is so good that drivers are tempted to speed, violating the signage. The sharp bends add to the risk,” said K.P. Barui, the additional SP (east), South 24-Parganas.
Around four hours after Bera’s accident, barely 2km away, a private bus ferrying passengers from Barrackpore to Ghotakpukur rammed into a lamp-post at Bamonghata, allegedly while overtaking another bus. Three passengers were injured.
Three persons, one of them deputy mayor Farzana Alam’s husband Abdul Momin, had died on the stretch recently.
Momin, who was riding a motorcycle, was hit by a lorry at Kantatala in March. Two days later, Achintya Kumar Bhar, 39, a software employee at Sector V, and the driver of a car he had hired were killed trap after the vehicle fell into a canal at Koila Depot. Last year, a bus plunged into the canal, killing a child.
