Sept. 2: The Gour Banga University today announced that the registration of 74 first-year students of Meghnad Saha College in Itahar would be cancelled for allegedly copying during the BA Part I examinations.
Pampa Pal, the wife of the North Dinajpur Trinamul Youth Congress president, Gautam Pal, is among the 74 candidates. Pampa had been caught while copying from chits she had reportedly smuggled in for sociology paper I exam on August 27.
Sanatan Das, the controller of examinations of the university, said today in Malda that the action was being taken to curb the practice of mass copying. “We are going to cancel the registration of 74 first-year students of Meghnad Saha College for their involvement in copying during the exams. Yesterday, we had decided to take similar action against 19 students of Abdul Ghani Dewan College in Harirampur also caught for copying.”
Once the registration is cancelled, the students will be struck of the rolls of the university and will not be allowed to seek re-admission to any college affiliated to the same varsity, said Das.
On Saturday, Das was beaten up by examinees at the Harirampur College when he caught several students for copying. He said today also, seven students were caught copying at Harirampur and one at Itahar.
The state human rights commission today directed inspector-general of police, North Bengal, Sashi Kant Pujari, to probe into the attack in Harirampur college and submit a report within two weeks.
The action against the students has assumed political overtones. Trinamul has directly accused Das of acting in a politically-motivated manner.
“The controller of examination is acting in a politically-motivated manner. There are so many exam centres and he is concentrating only on Meghnad Saha College whose principal, Swapna Mukherjee, is a CPI leader, and the wife of former MLA and Left Front minister, Srikumar Mukherjee. I have informed education minister, Bratya Basu, about the development,” said Trinamul Congress MLA from Itahar Amal Acharjee.
Das refused comment on the Trinamul charge.
Teachers of the varsity today launched a dharna in Malda to protest the attacks on teachers. The dharna was continuing even after 7pm.
