Guwahati, Sept. 2: Fide-rated player Chingkhei Singh annexed the title of the 10th P.C. Borooah First Sunday Chess tournament held on the P.C. Borooah Chess Academy premises here yesterday. Chingkhei tallied 5.5 points from six rounds to claim the title.
Chingkhei defeated Hridyansh Kashyap in the first round, Prithwis Das in the second round and Abhilekh Mahanta in the third round. In the fourth round, Chinghkhei settled for a draw with Nitish Das. In the fifth round, Chinghkei defeated second seed Pradip Bhuyan and in the sixth round, he beat Khanindra Barman to claim the title.
Chiraranjan Bhuyan finished runners-up scoring five points from the same number of rounds. He started his campaign well by winning the first three rounds. In the fourth round, he lost to Khanindra Barman but by winning the last two rounds against Uddinabh Mahanta and Rajesh Kalita, he claimed the second position.
Khanindra Barman and Sasanka Shandilya also tallied five points each but finished third and fourth respectively on the basis of their tie-break scores.
Sasanka also started well but his loss in the third round against Chiraranjan held him back and he had to be satisfied with the fourth position.
Promising youngster Nitish Das of Faculty School did well to score 4.5 points and claim the fifth position. Nitish defeated top seed Koushik Konwar in the third round and drew against champion Chinghkei Singh in the fourth. But his loss against Khanindra Barman proved costly and by winning the final round against Kaustav Lahiri, he claimed the fifth position.
Top seed Koushik could not live up to expectations and had to be content with the sixth position by tallying 4.5 points.
His third round loss to youngster Nitish Das and fourth round draw against Prachurjya Gayan proved costly. Though he made a valiant effort by winning the last two rounds, it was not enough for the top five positions.
Prachurjya Gayan scored four points for the first position in under-16 category while Rajesh Kalita and Pranit Malhotra emerged toppers in under-13 and under-11 categories respectively by scoring four points each.
In under-9 category, Bhabishnu Pranti Bordoloi scored 3.5 points for the first position. Prithwis Das and Hridayansh Kashyap got second and third position respectively by scoring 3 and 2.5 points.
Shahil Dey and Aayushraj Sharma scored three points each in under-7 category to be declared first and second respectively according to their tie-break scores. Unmilita Pathak scored 2.5 points for the third position.
