Sept. 1: Gouranga Roy, who was arrested from Mainaguri in connection with the blast in Alipurduar that killed a bomb squad personnel, has told police that he used to buy SIM cards in different names to send them to KLO militants through people like Menaka Roy, officers said here today.
Menaka was arrested from Dhupguri in connection with the same case.
Police sources said Gouranga ran a roadside eatery at Mainaguri in Jalpaiguri and he was also a land broker.
“Gouranga has admitted that he used to buy SIM cards in different names and send those to KLO militants through different channels, one of them being Menaka. Gouranga had regular contacts with KLO leaders like Tom Adhikary and he was busy collecting contact numbers and information about tea planters, small tea growers and businessmen from Mainaguri and surrounding areas,” said a source.
“We suspect that once the information reached the KLO, the outfit would use it to extort money from these people as it used to do earlier.”
Menaka, an anganwadi worker in Dhupguri, is known to be close to Tom Adhikary.
“She had steady links with Tom and some other militants. Her task was to coax unemployed youths, particularly from the Rajbangshi community, into joining KLO,” said an official.
The police are going through the call details of Menaka’s cellphone.
