Imphal, Sept. 1: Suspected cadres of the Zeliangrong United Front shot at and injured a village chairman after he was abducted from his home last night in Khoupum area, about 88km from Imphal in Tamenglong district.
The injured person, identified as Nailing Kamei, 45, chairman of Chingmei village authority was admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences here with bullet injuries and marks of severe beating all over his body. Doctors said he was out of danger.
According to reports given by his family members to police, seven armed ZUF cadres came to their house last night and took Kamei away at gunpoint, saying that the militant outfit wanted to hold discussions with him.
Shortly after midnight, the family received a phone call from the abductors, who told them to collect Kamei’s body from the Lamkalung Government Primary School complex, which is also in the Khoupum area.
The cadres apparently left the village headman thinking he was dead.
“When we rushed to the school, we found our father lying unconscious in a pool of blood. He was shot on his left leg. His left eye was broken and his body bore marks of severe beating by clubs or sticks,” Tamjalu Kamei, the daughter of the village chief, told reporters at the hospital.
She said the family had no clue why the outfit abducted their father and left him for dead after severe “torture”.
“We want the organisation to issue a clarification as to why my father was abducted and treated in this manner,” the daughter said. She also demanded that the government take immediate action against the perpetrators of the crime and arrest them.
The Women’s Committee of Khoupum condemned the attack.
The ZUF, which operates in Khoupum, has made repeated attempts to ambush deputy chief minister Gaikhangam in the past few years.
Gaikhangam, who is also the home minister, represents the Nungba Assembly constituency, under which Khoupum lies.
A few years ago, the state government had rushed additional police force from Imphal and had taken the army’s help to escort Gaikhangam and some other legislators from Khoupum to Imphal, following reports that ZUF cadres were lying in wait to ambush Gaikhangam, while he was returning to Imphal after a visit to Khoupum.
