Guwahati, Sept. 1: Indian Weightlifting Federation president and Rajya Sabha member from Assam Birendra Prasad Baishya has been appointed the chairman of Ethics Commission of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) in a meeting of the IWF at Beijing on August 27.
He is the first from Assam and the first from India and Asia to be appointed to this prestigious post.
The commission plays an important role in the international weightlifting arena in view of the anti-doping measures adopted by the IWF in the Olympic charter to make the sport a clean one.
He is also an executive board member in the IWF, executive member in the Asian Weightlifting Federation and vice-president in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation.
Mr Kamrup: Robi Meitei of Fitness World Gym was crowned Mr Kamrup in the 13th Kamrup District Body Building Championship organised at Hedayatpur ground here yesterday by Navajivan Sangha under the aegis of Kamrup District Physique Sports Association.
Sumit Kr Saikia of Gold’s Gym was adjudged Mr Kamrup Junior and Amit Roy of Saraighat Gym was Master Mr Kamrup.
The Saraighat Gym contingent was adjudged the Best Team for the seventh consecutive year.
The championship, formally inaugurated by former Jammu and Kashmir chief justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, was conducted by international referee Bhabajyoti Goswami.
