At least four people were injured in a confrontation between a landlord and his tenant at Sector IV market area in Bokaro steel city on Sunday.
Ugly scenes were witnessed in the locality when members of both groups clashed with each other with batons and iron roads over an eviction issue, police said.
Chotelal Jaiswal, a domestic LPG cylinder distributor, has been a tenant of Ranjit Kumar for almost a decade. Jaiswal runs a firm— Sarabjit Gas Agency — at the rented portion. However, the landlord has been asking him to vacate the premises, the police added.
“In 2010, Jaiswal had entered into an agreement with Kumar that he would shift his agency after three years,” said a source in Sector IV police station. But when Jaiswal failed to honour the deal, the landlord served a legal notice to him, asking the tenant to vacate the plot by August 31. This time too, Jaiswal did not relent.
On Saturday evening, Kumar approached the police station. But he was told that action could be taken only after the expiry of the deadline, i.e. on Sunday.
Two family friends of Kumar —Rishabh Kumar and Raju Khan — however, put up a lock on the main door of the agency on Saturday night. Jaiswal’s family members immediately informed the police, who took Rishabh and Khan into custody for illegally locking the main gate.
Kumar’s supporters, including some political party workers, on Sunday morning, secured the release of Rishabh and Khan against a bond, claiming that they will not repeat their act.
However, on their way back home, they came to know that Jaiswal’s supporters had re-captured the premises.
Immediately, Kumar and his men went to the spot and a clash broke out between the two groups.
While Rishabh and Khan from Kumar’s side received serious injuries. Jaiswal himself along with his relative Kamlesh Kumar Jaiswal was injured.
Bokaro city police inspector Naresh Sahay said, “Complaint and counter-complaint have been lodged by both the parties. Action against the guilty would be taken after our inquiry.”
Of the injured, Khan is critical with head injuries and undergoing treatment at Patliputra Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad.
