Calcutta: Swathi Ghate of LIC emerged as the sole leader with 4.5 points at the end of Round VI of the 40th UBI National Women Premier Chess Championship, organised by the Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy and Allsport Management, at the Spring Club, on Saturday.
Half a point behind Swathi is defending champion Mary Ann Gomes. WGM Swathi will cross swords with top seed Tania Sachdev on Sunday before taking on Nisha Mohota the day after. Swathi, without doubt, will have her task cut out.
IM Tania recorded her second victory on the trot when she won after a prolonged struggle against Soumya Swaminathan in a Scotch defence.
