Silchar, Aug. 31: Amit Kanti Nath, 24, a resident of Katigora in Cachar district, who was abducted on his way to Guwahati from Ladrymbai in Meghalaya on August 21, was freed yesterday. Katigora is 30km from here.
Sources said Nathís family members are on their way to the hotel in Ladrymbai in Jaintia hills of Meghalaya, where he works as a manager, to bring him back. Police sources said unidentified men whisked Nath away on August 21 at gunpoint after stopping the car in which he was travelling.
Subsequently, the abductors called his family and demanded Rs 50 lakh as ransom.
Nathís family members said they tried to lodge a complaint with Meghalaya police but they allegedly did not cooperate despite the fact that the crime occurred in that state.
According to sources, Gautam Roy, Assamís minister for public health engineering, intervened and called up the Meghalaya government seeking its cooperation.
Sources said the kidnappers released Nath somewhere near the Assam-Meghalaya border on Friday in exchange for a big sum of money.
