Calcutta, Aug. 30: A Calcutta High Court division bench today upheld a single-bench order that set aside the decision of the state government, West Bengal University of Health Sciences and the Medical Council of India (MCI) to bar a Haldia medical college run by a Lakshman Seth-headed NGO from functioning.
The division bench of Justices Nishita Mahtre and Kanchan Chakrabarty today directed the state government, West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) and the MCI to restore the approval of the medical college within two weeks.
“The MCI may pay a visit to the medical college campus before giving its approval,” the division bench said in its order.
The division bench also directed the state government, MCI and the WBUHS to pay Rs 10,000 each to the college authorities “as cost of the case”.
The judges, however, stayed the operation of the verdict for a fortnight to give the state and the others time to move the Supreme Court if they so desired.
