Malda, Aug. 29: An 11-year-old boy was crushed to death by a truck on a potholed stretch of NH34 at Kaliachak near here this morning, triggering a four-hour blockade on the road by the local people and an attack on police who had allegedly reached the spot late.
The pradhan of Jalalpur gram panchayat, Khejmuddin Ahmed, said the stretch where Noor Mohammad had been killed was accident-prone.
“Accidents happen frequently because of the bad condition of the stretch. We have been demanding that traffic police be deployed in the area, but nothing has been done. That is why the people vented their anger on the police today,” he said.
Noor, a Class IV student, was standing on the road at Jalalpur when a truck suddenly lost control and ran him over around 6am.
Soon, around 400 people gathered at the spot and disrupted traffic on the highway. They said a team from the Kaliachak police station, located 6km from Jalalpur, had arrived two hours late.
The mob surrounded the police with the body of Noor and threw stones at them.
The glass panes of a police vehicle were broken also.
and reinforcements were later sent to the spot. The blockade was held from 6am to 10am.
The superintendent of police, Malda, Kalyan Mukherjee, said: “I have found out that the Kaliachak police went to the spot as soon as they were informed about the accident. A police vehicle was damaged in the stone-throwing. No one has been arrested and we are looking for the driver of the truck.”
