Raiganj, Aug. 29: Six students were held at the Meghnad Saha College in Itahar today for allegedly cheating during the BA Part-I exam by a team led by the controller of examinations of Gour Banga University.
Sanatan Das, the controller of examinations, alleged that one of the examinees had tried to snatch the seized answer sheets from him and assault him. A five-member varsity team, led by Das, had gone to the college to inquire into Tuesday’s incident in which Swapna Mukherjee, the principal of the college, and three others had been allegedly assaulted by a group of Trinamul Congress workers.
When the Bengali and English, elective, exams were about to start at 11am today, teachers refused to turn up for invigilation, saying there was no proper security. So, Das and the four other varsity officials were forced to oversee the exam.
Das caught a student, Natabar Sarkar, copying answers. But the student became aggressive and tried to snatch the seized answer script from the controller. The team also caught five others who were cheating.
“We caught six persons cheating and their papers have been seized. All the six were asked to leave the examination hall. I was physically assaulted by one of them in full view of the police,” said Das.
A group of Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad members entered the principal’s chamber and shouted slogans against Das at noon.
