Golaghat, Aug. 29: An Ulfa (I) militant was arrested from Golaghat district last night.
Indrajit Regon, a “sergeant major” of Ulfa (Independent), was arrested from Mera Bridge Tiniali in an operation, led by additional superintendent of police Numal Mahato, after an intelligence input.
Mahato told The Telegraph that Regon had joined Ulfa in 2003 under the leadership of Roma Bora (now a pro-talks cadre). He took arms training in Myanmar in 2004.
In 2007, he entered Assam via Nagaland and stayed in Sivasagar district. He was arrested by Sivasagar police at Mahmora in May 2008 and was in jail for 16 months. After getting out on bail, he re-joined Ulfa in 2010 and served as the personal body guard of Ulfa leader Paresh Barua. He was working in Golaghat under the command of Bijoy Axom and Partha Axom.
The police recovered a .22 pistol with three rounds of ammunition, three mobile handsets, 10 SIM cards, six Ulfa demand letters, a torch and four mobile chargers from Regon.
